I’ve been meaning to write this for more than a year.

There is almost nothing more important to address with your new puppy than careful and comprehensive socialization. Puppy socialization classes can play a part in the process. But, they aren’t enough on their own.

So, like I said, I’ve been meaning to write this article to cover the why and the basic how of puppy socialization. It’s especially important to get this sort of information out there right now since some misguided trainers are warning about the “problems” of socialization (what are those problems? hint: I already mentioned that they are misguided).

But someone beat me to it and wrote a better article than I probably would have.

Maria and her business partner Megan, run Fetch the Leash, a dog training company in lovely Burlington, Vermont. They are well educated - and they work with puppies constantly. They know first-hand the life-long advantages of good socialization and the fallout of doing it poorly.

I won’t belabor the point any longer than necessary. Go now and read Maria’s good piece about the why and how of good puppy socialization.

You only have a finite amount of time to impress upon your puppy that the world is mostly safe.
